My time as co-chair

Leading Hack the 6ix as Co-chair was one of the most eye-opening experiences. In total, I was accountable not only to my 34 teammates but also to the 1000+ attendees that we would be welcoming in August which was a lot of responsibility for my first year in university!

Case: Solar-powered home systems in rural off-grid Asia

Asia has the largest off-grid population in the world. Around 800 million people in Asia live in a state of near darkness, coping with unreliable or non-existent access to electricity on a daily basis. Most of these communities are clustered in several highly populated countries

There are several ways in which locals in poverty-stricken countries light their homes. Although many methods like candles, battery-run torches, or other creative alternatives are used, kerosene lamps remain the most popular alternative for off-grid homes.

Solution

Partner with the Bangladeshi Rural Development Board to create an ambassador program to reach remote villages that all speak varying dialects

Laurier Case Team (2nd Place) - International Business Delegate

Competing in international business

JDC Central (JDCC) is the largest undergraduate business school competition in Central Canada, which brings over 450 student delegates together from across Canada. Lasting three whole days, JDCC is a fierce competition testing delegates on academic cases across 8 different business disciplines. I represented my team on the international business team.

The training arc

Training was intense. Very intense. Every sunday - we would dedicate 5 hours in the morning to doing business cases, presenting them to judges (professors, alumni, professionals), and then going through intense feedback. We would then spend the rest of the day studying various case studies and learning more in-depth knowledge about our industries and academic disciplines.

Results

I improved my presentation skills drastically. Being challenged to give better presentations every week built my ability to create engaging slides, modulate my intonations, and deliver flawless presentations. Our team ended up getting 2nd place overall in the entire competition!

Debating the ethics of opioids

My team and I debated about the ethics surrounding opioids and whether they are effective solutions for pain management. We had the opportunity to debate 10 different teams across North America and had the pleasure of getting 1st place in the competition. Also got a free trip to Disney Orlando! ;)

What I learned

Debate is one of my greatest passions. I had the opportunity to lead my debate team and participate in competitions around the world. Only through debate did I learn the power of speaking up and - constructive arguments.

Repurposing old tablets as learning tools

As part of AshokaU's Changemaker Innovation Challenge, we were asked to develop a solution to a problem that resonated with us. We developed a sophisticated program that recycled old phones and tablets, pre-loaded them with educations content, and then redistributed them to children in remote communities in Ethiopia.

Impacting organizations closest to my heart
